We’re proud to introduce proud South African Greg Bowes & talented student-writer Alison Dennehy!
With the beautiful nation of South Africa being showcased to the world, we’re so proud to have finally found an incredibly proud South African, Mr. Greg Bowes, who will be writing for us throughout the tournament. Greg’s ”unique” angle will be a South African’s perspective on the event and what it means to the country and continent. He plans to refute the ridiculous and inflammatory media reports about SA in the UK and European press (“Machete Race Wars” and the like, which he assumes have put a lot of people off coming here), so in the run-up to the event he’d like to put a positive spin what’s really happening; what it’s really like here and how preparations are progressing.
During the event itself Greg will report on all the auxiliary stuff around the event: info on the Vuvuzelas, Makarapas, Diski Dances, art exhibitions and cultural enterprises that have sprung up – ie. the things that make SA soccer culture unique and that will play a major part in making this whole event special – and distinctly African. He will also keep tabs on the African teams, although – and he hope he’s wrong in this regard - this may only last until the end of the group phase! Greg has previous experience writing for the likes of the South African version of The Guardian, and he’ll be at a few of the World Cup games, including the opening match between South Africa and Mexico on June 11th in Johannesburg! Give him a warm welcome to the AFR team!

Also, welcome the talented Alison Dennehy! Alison has grown up a Reading FC fan with her dad taking her to all the games since she was about 5 years old. She has been a season ticket holder for ten seasons.
Though currently studying English literature and language, Government and Politics, Psychology, and history, Alison is a student-writer who actually hopes to pursue sports journalism. She plans to take advantage of this opportunity to share her England-based voice with the masses, and we’re so happy to have such an intelligent, footy-mad female writer joining the AFR team!
