FC Barcelona vs. Brazil in 1999 - The Full Match
The beginning of the week is never enjoyable, but let’s lessen the dosage of suffering with a glorious find on Youtube. 1999 was FC Barcelona’s centenary year and the whole season was quite the celebration of everything FC Barcelona. The highlight of the season (apart from winning the league title) was a friendly match on the 28th of April against the boys from Brazil who finished 2nd in the 1998 World Cup.
Ronaldo (the original) and Romario were making their return to the Camp Nou, but all eyes were on FC Barcelona maestro Rivaldo. Before the game, Rivaldo said he was happy to wear the Blaugrana jersey, but country won over club and Rivaldo played for his homeland. Legends were aplenty, as Figo (before the Real Madrid transfer) put on a show. Pep Guardiola started the match, but was subbed off at half time. Who subbed him off? Well, a certain young Catalan midfielder named Xavi. The match ended 2-2, and it was a real spectacle for all involved. (Full line-ups listed in the description of the video)

Keeping Neymar at Santos meant compromising all female football?
Europe’s giants were getting ready to fight over the signing of the Neymar, the 18-year-old Brazilian prodigy. However, in November Santos announced that Neymar had signed a contract that lasted until 2014 and included a 50% pay increase. Santos are one of the richest clubs in South America ($45m annual revenue), but even in a booming Brazilian economy needed to make huge sacrifices to keep their star.
Club president Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro said: “Keeping Neymar was a gesture of enormous courage but it has a cost. Winning titles has made player salaries more expensive and it’s impossible not to cut costs.”
What were his cost-cutting solutions? Well, controversially getting rid of all female football at the club, the women’s team (nicknamed the Mermaids) and the women’s futsal team. As a point of reference, the five-time FIFA female player of the year Marta played at Santos in 2010 and 2011. But Neymar, already reaching superstar status for his flashy style of play and vibrant personality, shouldn’t be held responsible for the cuts or anything like that. After all, it was the club’s decision to do everything within their power to keep him from going abroad. But this seems to be a “one step forward, two steps back” kind of situation doesn’t it? Garrincha, the little bird
Translated by Gordon Fleetwood with help from his friend Jorge
Garrincha é o nome de um passarinho alegre, cor de terra
[Garrincha is the name of a little bird, color of the earth]
Que quem apelidou Manoel Francisco dos Santos “Mané Garrincha”, conhecia tanto o rapaz quanto o passarinho. E era um poeta
[Whoever nicknamed Manoel Francisco dos Santos “Mané Garrincha” knew much about the boy and the bird. And he was a poet.]
————————————————————————————————
Song: (The phrases that come on the screen - and their translations - are in bold)
Vocês devem saber
Porque o Garrincha
Foi bicampeão
[You must know
Why Garrincha was twice a champion]
Quando ele chuta a bola
Ate parece um tiro de canhão
[When he shoots the ball
It looks like a cannon shot]
Ele balança pra lá, balança pra cá
Com essas pernas de arrasar
[He wings from here to there
with those devastating legs]
A torcida presta atenção
Ele fazendo cara de João**
[Pay attention supporters
He’s doing the face of João]
** (Joao was the first defender to defend Garrincha in Pau Grande and Garrincha said “no matter how famous or good a defender was, in front of him, he would be just another João”)
Vocês devem saber
Porque o Garrincha
Foi bicampeão
[You must know
Why Garrincha was twice a champion]
Quando ele chuta a bola
Ate parece um tiro de canhão
[When he shoots the ball
It looks like a cannon shot]
Ele balança pra lá, balança pra cá
Com essas pernas de arrasar
[He wings from here to there
with those devastating legs]
A torcida presta atenção
Ele fazendo cara de João
[Pay attention supporters
He’s doing the face of João]

Interviewer: Garrincha como aqui você rapidamente traçaria o seu perfil? Como é você, segundo você mesmo?
Interviewer: Garrincha, how would you quickly desribe your profil? How are you?
Garrincha: Eu sou isso aqui que você ta vendo, nunca mudei em nada. Sempre uma pessoa alegre, sempre brincando…e cerra. Sou assim mesmo, nunca esqueci o que eu fui antes nem depois.
Garrincha: I’m how you are seeing here, never changed anything. Always happy, always playing around…and that’s it….I am anyways, never forgot what I was before or after.
