What makes this for me are the vivacious colours streaming out of the ball and Villa’s right leg. Oh, and the goatee is quite snazzy.
Friday Flashback: El Atleti 4-0 Los Galacticos at the Vicente Calderon
Arguably the biggest match in Europe this weekend will be at the Vicente Calderon as Atletico Madrid host their bitter crosstown Galacticos, Real Madrid. Though historically Real have had the upper hand in the derby, the 1976-77 campaign was a year that all supporting Los Rojiblancos will remember forever. Not only did Atlético win La Liga, edging out Barcelona by one point, but they dominated Real Madrid 4-nil at the Calderon. Times have changed with José Mourinho’s club sitting atop of the table, but who knows, maybe Diego Forlan and the rest of El Atleti will summon the spirit of ‘77. Think they’ll manage a result?
David Villa scored to make it 2-nil against Lichtenstein with a laser from 25-yards out. But more importantly, this goal was Villa’s 43rd for Spain, which equals Raúl’s tally and makes both generations of #7s joint leading scorers for España.
Iker Casillas, you’re a legend. Thankfully this glorious moment was captured.
Iker: Thanks to my parents, my brother… (tears… pause)
Sara Carbonero (reporter/girlfriend): It’s ok. Let’s talk about the game.
Iker: no, no… my friends and you
