Recherché football, vibrant collectiveness, reflection, and music looking back to the future
In my opinion, the greatest opportunity football has, in its position as the heart of sport and even culture in general, is promoting an appreciation for the game in unlikely places. These trends flare-up around massive international tournaments, such as the World Cup, the EUROS, and even Copa América to a degree. Last summer, amongst all of the madness, an esoteric partnership was particularly refreshing to see. The Fader, a leader in music, style, and art, teamed up with Nike to produce the Pitch Perfect program that ambitiously captured the “collective consciousness of togetherness, happiness, and just joy in celebration” that the World Cup provided. Along with a set of videos, there were 6 Pitch Perfect mixtapes with artwork from Siggi Eggertsson, one that represented the culture of each continent.
The South America mixtape resonates with my conception of the passionate South American spirit, but with the weekend approaching I thought I’d leave you with these tapes to accompany you on the pitch, in a park, or en la playa. EURO 2012 is nearly here (thinking on a macro-scale, mind you) and I can’t wait to see what some of the world’s most innovative minds create. What’s the most inspired football project you’ve witnessed?

Arsenal Anthem (Keep The Faith) - by Danny Graft

Have to say that this has been stuck in my head, especially with witty lyrics like…

“But I can’t forget about The King. Henry did too many legendary things. F****** hero, hattrick at the San Siro. He did it for Bobby not DeNiro.”

“Six years pain, dreams in a drain. Feel like a war, man, it’s more than a game.”

Arsenal fan (and rapper) Danny Graft with a quality tune that will serve as a bit of therapy for most fans in North London after what has gone on these past few days.

French Electro artist, Martin Solveig’s new video for his track, Ready 2 Go, featuring Bloc Party’s, Kele Okereke, features Solveig dressed in France’s national team garb performing the song in Stade de France, in what appears to be a pre-match pump up session.

Tres mignon.

I risk my reputation as a football blogger with saying this, but Justin Bieber actually had decent technique training with FC Barcelona (he had a concert in the city last night. See my twitpic on his fans invading the Barça metro).

Like you, I had an initial “save the crest, burn Bieber’s shirt!” reaction mixed with a bit of “this is everything I hate about our world today.” But yeah, after watching the clip, not too shabby. Decent left-footed efforts on goal, then playing pick up with Bojan. In a world where NFL receiver Chad Johnson gets a legitimate tryout with a Major League Soccer side simply because he’s Chad Johnson, I’m actually not too bothered with this even though it is an embarrassment for Barça and the Spanish league as a whole. Troubling, I know.
